Esbjörn Svensson Trio is one of the most influential and significant bands in European jazz. Their success story came to an abrupt end when Esbjörn Svensson tragically passed away in 2008, but the music and enthusiasm surrounding the band continue to live on. Now, the audience in Skellefteå has a unique opportunity to experience a tribute to the trio’s distinctive sound when 30 Years of e.s.t. – Tribute to Esbjörn Svensson Trio takes the stage at Sara kulturhus on May 23 – the group’s only performance in Sweden!
To mark the 30th anniversary of the trio’s formation, e.s.t. bassist Dan Berglund and drummer Magnus Öström gathered in 2023 with friends and musical companions to breathe new life into the music. What was initially intended as a one-time tribute quickly evolved into an acclaimed project that has taken Europe by storm. Following a celebrated concert before more than 2,000 spectators in Stockholm, the ensemble has performed at Philharmonie Köln, JazzBaltica, Leverkusener Jazztage, and several other prestigious festivals. The Cologne concert even resulted in a critically acclaimed album, released by ACT Music in 2024.
– It’s not every day that you get the honor of booking the top tier of Swedish jazz musicians for the same night. Dan and Magnus were original members of Esbjörn Svensson Trio, so this will be an exclusive concert as close to the original as possible, now that Esbjörn Svensson is no longer with us, says Sofia Andersson Lundberg, Program Director at Sara kulturhus.
The musicians in this project already have established and successful careers, making the ongoing success of this tribute even more remarkable. The passion for e.s.t.’s music, which remains just as relevant and innovative more than three decades later, permeates every performance, promising a concert experience beyond the ordinary.
